SMOGGYS

SMOGGYS

In the summer of 2019, the Australian bushfires blazed out of control. RFS and other fire services fought tirelessly against the hundreds of unconfined fires that burned across the country. Wildlife, homes and human lives were disappearing at an accelerated rate, and the resulting smoke orbited the world and blanketed Australian cities.

In response to the helplessness felt by all Australian’s, we partnered with our mates Bec and Marco from Wavemaker to create Smoggys - smoke masks with Aussie patterns to normalise wearing masks that also acted as a donation to the RFS.

From the incredible solidarity of friends, family and the wider Australian community, we achieved our $10,000 GoFundMe in 20 days. We used to this to order and distribute over 1,000 masks, both adult and child-sized, with the assistance of the Aussie company Sendle. After riding the peaks of fire after fire and even the start of COVID-19 in Australia, we ended up raising over $21k for the RFS.

Not only did we achieve what we set out to do, but Smoggys also acted as a powerful symbol on the imminence of climate change and kick-started the conversation around mask-wearing in Australia.
